Is Davido A Music Opportunist Or Strategist?

Posted by on September 17, 2020 0

Afrobeats superstar Davido about a week ago returned actively to social media after over three months

of absence. The ‘Dami Duro‘ crooner said he needed some personal time to do some cleansing.

And then he went under the radar with no activity on his social media pages.

On 10th September 2020, he returned with a bang deserving of an artiste of his calibre. Davido didn’t say ‘hello guys I’m back from my social media break’ but dropped an instant banger Fem! a single coming off his forthcoming studio album ‘A Better Time’ as part of the return. It was only a matter of hours and everyone in the industry was talking about ‘Fem!’, and the buzz continued to mount stretching from hours to days soon after its release.

At face value, ‘Fem’ doesn’t have the most amazing production quality, it could have been better, songwriting rated at 4/10. On a normal day, this song may not enjoy as much buzz as it currently does. The trick is in the message the song carries which is 10/10 because it is very clear and direct.

Davido milked his alleged beef with Burna Boy to drive the buzz around the new song. ‘FEM!’ is a word in the Nigerian vocabulary used whenever you try to hush someone into silence. From a more general sense, the DMW boss literally dropped a diss track for Burna who took shots at him at different times in the past.

Antecedence shows Davido is that guy who loves to use his music as a tool to fire back at his perceived enemies or haters. He did it to Dele Momodu on ‘Bahd Baddo Baddest‘ and Osinachi remix. He addressed his issue with Nollywood actress Caroline Danjuma on ‘Fia‘ etc. These songs naturally become an instant hit for the Afrobeats superstar.

One thing is clear, Davido likes to milk about every situation he is in at the time to his advance. There are several songs that he has released that have done so well because of the situation surrounding the release. Notably, his love songAssurance dedicated to Chioma on her birthday. ‘Assurance’ did so well because of the circumstance of its release, everyone was talking about wanting the kind of ‘Davido and Chioma’ love. And then the Porsche car birthday gift to Chioma.

Now the buzz on ‘Fem’ continues because a group of Nigerians think the singer is using lingos from the NBM and the controversies continue. Whether, the song is a diss track, something made out for the NBM boys or whatever interpretation people attach to it, the mentions continue to trend. OBO and his team understand the outcome if he took shots at Burna Boy and so have channelled that energy into generating music sales. So far the numbers have been fantastic for the DMW/30BG crew.

In the next couple of weeks to come, Davido would be putting out his ‘A Better Time‘ album and the team have cooked up different approaches to sell the album. One thing is sure, Davido’s son would be on the cover of his forthcoming album. There are strong indications that ‘A Better Time‘ will drop in October and most likely on Ifeanyi’s 1st birthday. That move would naturally get people talking as he would use the opportunity to unveil his son.

From a certain point of view, Davido comes off as a big opportunist and on the flip side, he is quite the strategist, it all depends on how you look at it.
