SPORT VIDEO: Canelo Alvarez: Mayweather Wouldn’t Fight Me In My Prime

By Matt Lieberman: Canelo Alvarez says he feels that Floyd Mayweather Jr would avoid fighting him if the two fighters were both in their primes at the same time.

Canelo thinks Mayweather would avoid him rather than take the fight because he says he would knock him out. In the hypothetical fight that Canelo talks about, Mayweather would be in his prime fighting the Mexican star right now with him at his best at 168. Obviously, the difference in weight could prove to be a big factor in the fight. Some would argue that Mayweather’s prime weight was when he was fighting at 130 [super featherweight] from 1998 to 2001. There’s little chance that Mayweather could go up 38 lbs to fight Canelo at 168.

NEWS:   Canelo Alvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders fight is off, over 22-foot ring size A then 36-year-old Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) defeated a 22-year-old Canelo by a 12 round majority decision eight years ago in 2013 in a fight that took place at a 152-lb catch-weight at the time. Back then, Canelo was fighting at 154, but he had reached the end of him being able to make that weight comfortably. By agreeing to fight Mayweather at 152, Canelo put himself at a disadvantage because he had to take off an additional two lbs, and he was barely making 154 at that point.

The extra two lbs proved to be crucial for Mayweather, as it may have been just enough for him to weaken Canelo to get the victory.

Canelo Says He’d Have Knocked Mayweather Out

He’d have nothing to do with me. If we were both at our prime, our best prime, he wouldn’t have anything to do with me. NEWS:   Eubank Jr: Saunders will be groveling to fight me after Canelo “Nothing. I’d knock him out,” said Canelo to Graham Bensinger about Mayweather likely avoiding him like the plague if the two were in their primes. To be fair to Mayweather, he would have been too small to fight Canelo if the two fought when they were both in their primes.

It’s unfair hypothetical for Canelo to be comparing himself to Mayweather, a fighter that was in the zenith of his career when he fought at 130. Mayweather didn’t move up to 147 until 2005, and he only knocked out 3 of the 12 fighters he fought in that weight class during his career. When you compare the many knockouts that Mayweather had when he was fighting at 130, it’s clear that super featherweight was the best weight class for him, not welterweight.

If you want to be technical about it, Canelo WOULD have likely knocked Mayweather out if the two had fought prime for prime if there were a way to match them when they were at their physical best. But Canelo would be close to 40 lbs heavier than the 130-lb Mayweather by fighting at 168. For that fight to happen, Mayweather would have likely needed to bulk up to the 150s because there’s no chance that Canelo could drain down to the 130s.

Canelo Caught COVID Before Yildirim Fight

“I started first with no sense of smell or taste. I got tested and I had to be 15 days in isolation because my wife had it too,” said Canelo about coming down with COVID shortly before his fight with Avni Yildirim last February. “But I didn’t tell anyone because I didn’t really feel anything. I had no other symptoms except what I said: no taste or smell. But I got COVID, and after I got well, I did the test again. I went to San Diego and trained for only one month,” said Canelo.

It says a lot about Canelo that he could bounce back quickly enough to obliterate Yildirim in three rounds. Alvarez didn’t look like a person that had been ill with COVID, but that illness strikes people in different ways. Some people don’t become as sick as others, and Canelo appears to have been one of the lucky ones.
